Travelling with an infant on Spicejet – What to expect

Travel, Traveling with Baby

This is a post about my experience on traveling with an infant on Spicejet Airlines. At the time of writing this post, we have traveled with an infant on Air India, Jet Airways, Spicejet Airlines, Indigo Airlines and Srilankan Airlines. To read about everything you want to know before traveling with an infant, read my post about flying with an infant 101. This will make travelling with infant in flight India easier than you think.

Parents often have queries like “3 month old baby allowed in flight in India”. Of course ! You can fly with a baby as small as 2 weeks or smaller if travelling for medical needs and you have a certificate from your doctor stating the reason for air travel and have arranged medical help onboard. I took my first flight with #LittleMi when she was 23 days old.

Travelling with an infant on Indigo Airlines { REVIEW }

I have taken two flights with baby on Spicejet Airlines when she was 14 months old. One was on the domestic sector from Bangalore – Chennai and the next one was an International flight from Chennai – Colombo. Unfortunately, both the times, we flew in an ATR which is a two seater and we had no empty seat between us to strap the car seat in.

Online booking on Spicejet

The online booking website of Spicejet can be found here and is pretty smooth and easy to use. It allows you to book an infant ticket on your own. Spicejet also allows you to pay upfront at the airport booking counter for an infant in case you forgot to do so. Be cautious, however, because airlines have a certain limit of the maximum number of infants allowed on one flight. So if you haven’t booked an infant ticket, you might be in trouble. Although, this is a rare case but a valid risk.

You can also select seats (paid service) and choose a meal (paid) for yourself while booking your flight online.

Spicejet Infant Ticket Charges

Approx Rs 1200 + taxes which is comparable to infant fare in domestic flight Indigo Airlines.

PRO TIP: You can choose to book an extra seat for the infant if you like to put the infant in a car seat next to you. However, be aware that Spicejet only allows FAA approved car seats for infants.

Check In

The check in is pretty smooth. If you’re flying with an infant on Spicejet Airlines, you can skip the long line of check ins and head straight to the priority check in line ! Other than that, Spicejet Check in rules are similar to any other domestic Indian Airline.

Here's how to skip the check-in queue on Spicejet Airlines.

Spicejet Infant Baggage Policy

Spicejet does not give you any extra check in baggage on infant ticket but they do give you 7 Kg hand baggage extra. You can also carry a car seat and stroller free of cost. You can check it in as a fragile item or choose to take it till the door of the aircraft where someone will take it from you and hand it over to you when you deboard the plane.

The security check is usually a line I’ve never been able to skip but if you do have a security official in sight, just ask them to open the ribbons on the stands and give you a shorter way to enter the security or skip the long winding queue.

For babywearing moms and dads – the officials at the security check will most often not ask you to remove the baby especially if you’re wearing the baby in a wrap or ring sling or if the baby is sleeping. However, if you’re wearing your baby in a soft structured carrier (SSC), depending of the security official, they may ask you to remove the baby if the baby is not sleeping. If you’re carrying the baby in a car seat, you have to remove the baby and take her in hand with you for the security check and get the car seat screened and tagged.

Flying with an infant on Spicejet Airlines

During boarding as well, the Spicejet staff calls for people on wheelchair, senior citizens and parents traveling with an infant on Spicejet Airlines to board first. Sometimes, they don’t.

In case you miss the call or arrive late, just skip the queue and ask them to board you first. I generally apologize to the staff and others standing to board before me and say, “I’m sorry I had to cut the queue but I’m travelling with a baby.” It’s quite effective and people won’t stare you down. I do it because I genuinely do not like to cut queues but if you don’t like to apologize, don’t because it’s your right to board first when traveling with an infant.

Car seat and / or stroller / travel system

You are allowed to carry a car seat and / or stroller or a travel system free of cost over and above the 7 kg hand baggage for the infant on Spicejet Airlines. You can choose to check in the stroller and car seat as a fragile item in the check in luggage or take it with you till the door of the aircraft where someone will take it from you and give it back to you when you deboard. If you want it back, you will have to inform the steward(ess) to inform the ground staff to get the stroller/ car seat when you deboard.

Flying with an infant on Spicejet Airlines

If you have not booked an extra seat for your infant on Spicejet Airlines, you will have to carry your baby on your lap throughout the flight. They are quite strict about taking the car seats inside and the flight I boarded was choc-a-bloc so be ready to leave the car seat at the door of the aircraft.

Infant Food

Spicejet Airlines does not offer complimentary food as it is a budget airline. Spicejet food menu is not at all exciting 🙁 They also don’t have any options for baby food so carry your own.

Diaper change

I never had to change Mi’s diapers in flight when she was exclusively on breast milk but diaper changes are the ghost in the closet when traveling with a baby who had started eating solids.

After starting solids, babies tend to poop little ‘pooplets’ many times a day and man are they smelly ! This can make you uncomfortable because the baby is on your lap and you can smell it. It will also make you uncomfortably aware of your proximity with co passengers and that you are subjecting them to your baby’s poop bomb. It’s all the more annoying if the seat belt sign is on and you can’t go to the toilet to change dirty diapers.

Whatever you do, DO NOT change the diaper on the seat. The airlines authority would make it a crime if they could. The best is to wait for the seatbelt sign to go off and rush to the toilet or let the flight land before using the toilet in the aircraft to change the diaper. If the smell is bearable, you can choose to enter the airport and use the baby care room over there.

Indigo Airlines has a diaper changing table in only one of the toilets so you might have to wait a little if it is already occupied.

Spicejet Airlines Staff and Service

Spicejet staff and their service is okay. I’ve not had any complaints but nothing great to say about them as compared to the Indigo Airlines staff who went out of her way to attend to my need as a new mother.
